Overview

Kurt Tamaru, MD, MBA, FAAFP, is a Senior Clinical Advisor at Welby Health. A board-certified family medicine physician and Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Tamaru brings over 25 years of experience in clinical operations, managed care, and healthcare innovation. He earned his BS in Biological Sciences from UC Irvine, his MD from Loyola University Chicago's Stritch School of Medicine, and his MBA from the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business. He completed his internship in general surgery at UC Davis before serving as a US Navy flight surgeon, then finished his family medicine residency at USC.

Dr. Tamaru's career has spanned some of the most consequential organizations in American healthcare. He developed the original home-based care program at CareMore, served as Senior Medical Officer at Anthem/Blue Cross of California, and spent five years in an executive role at Optum helping build out United Health Group's provider group operations across the country. He went on to found Guardiant Health, a virtual primary care model focused on proactive monitoring and intervention for older adults with chronic illness, and co-founded OneRoom Health, a pioneer in immersive care technology. He also serves as Chief Medical Officer and Board Member at Indigenous Pact PBC. Dr. Tamaru was recognized as a Modern Healthcare Innovators Award recipient in 2025.
